Chiapas is one of the poorest areas of Mexico in terms of wealth and material goods. However it is a land rich in natural resources and much natural beauty and archeology. The last rainforest lung in Mexico is in Chiapas - The Lacandon. In Chiapas there is great inequality and a history of evolution and reform. It is a unique area where the complexity of issues relating to peace, social justice and sustainability present themselves to those who live and visit. It is a perfect area for this congress being rich in living history and many international agencies working for justice and sustainability.
